‘My mother’s worried about you,’ Sienna flung the words at Keir as soon as he came into their bedroom later that night.

Much later, she registered with a strange sense of unease. In a series of late nights, this was one of the latest. Just what did Keir find to do until almost midnight almost every night?

‘She thinks you’re working too hard.’

‘And good evening to you, too,’ Keir returned satirically, slumping down onto the end of the bed and tugging his tie free at his throat.

My mother’s worried about you! This wife of his really knew how to stick a knife in without appearing to do so. Her mother! Did she know what it did to him to come home and find his wife in his bed, wearing only the sexiest slip of a nightgown he had ever seen, and be told that her mother worried about him? Which begged the implication that Sienna herself didn’t give a damn.

‘So do you agree with her?’

The narrow-eyed look he turned on her had a disturbingly appraising quality about it, one that made Sienna shift uneasily under the soft, downy duvet.

She was painfully aware of the fact that she was wearing only an oyster-coloured silk nightdress, its deep vee neckline exposing more of the creamy curves of her breasts than she was comfortable with in the present situation. Keir on the other hand was still fully dressed in an exquisitely cut dark grey suit, white shirt and what had once been an elegant burgundy silk tie but which was now hopelessly mangled by the careless way he was pulling at it.

‘You have been staying out late a lot.’

‘I’m a grown man, Sienna. I stopped obeying a nighttime curfew on my eighteenth birthday.’

‘I realise that. But would it be asking too much for you to let me know when you’re going to be really late?’

‘Why, sweetheart?’ It was a soft, silky hiss. The sort of voice that the serpent must have used in the Garden of Eden. ‘Missed me have you?’

‘Of course not!’

The retort had come too swiftly, Sienna reproached herself. It had been far too vehement as well.

‘I know you can look after yourself,’ she amended hastily. Understatement of the year. He could more than look after himself. She couldn’t imagine anyone who, coming under the influence of that charisma, the aura of authority and total self-assurance that he wore with the ease of a natural right, would even dare to think of trying it on.

‘Then what’s the problem?’

He was tugging at his tie again, his movements rough and impatient. When it finally came loose in his hand he tossed it in the vague direction of a chair, totally ignoring the way it fell short, slithering onto the thick bronze carpet instead.

‘I—she—we were afraid you’d wear yourself out.’

Even as she spoke the words she saw how ridiculous they were. She’d rarely, if ever, seen Keir even slightly tired, never mind worn out. He was one of those men who seemed to have endless reserves of stamina and was able to pace himself perfectly.
